Job Description & Requirements

President and CEO

Salt Lake City (preferred)/ Hybrid (possible)

The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is the only conservation group in North America dedicated to restoring, improving, and protecting mule deer and black-tailed deer and their habitat, with a focus on science and program efficiency. MDF’s conservation programs combined with grassroots, membership-driven support are the foundation of the organization. MDF is committed to sustaining western deer populations by ensuring quality habitat in the areas deer need on a daily, seasonal, and yearly basis. Conservation activities are delivered through efforts by MDF staff and in partnership with state and federal agencies as well as other nonprofit organizations.

MDF is also a strong voice for public access, wildlife management, and conservation policy issues. They support regulated hunting as a viable component to wildlife management and are committed to mentoring the next generation of sportsmen and women into the traditions of hunting, shooting sports, and conservation.

In 2023, MDF engaged in 127 habitat projects impacting 163,000 acres.

The next President & CEO must be ready to join with the Board to lead MDF in pursuing new strategic goals in conservation, stewardship, and member engagement through a proven ability in strategic leadership, external relations, fundraising, program management and oversight, collaborative ventures, and constituency building.

The ideal candidate will have a background that includes a high-level of strategic leadership and management combined with an extraordinary understanding of relationship-driven partnership and constituent management with an emphasis on understanding the culture of its members.

The ability to strategize, conceptualize, plan, organize, critically analyze, and follow through with complex programs, projects, budgets, staff, Board of Directors and advisory committee members, other volunteers, and a variety of constituencies is required. Successful candidates will possess strong management and team-building skills, including the ability to set clear priorities, realistic but ambitious goals, and delegate effectively.

The successful candidate will exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills to effectively interact with the Board, staff, environmental advocates and policy leaders, governmental officials, and other key stakeholders.  They will have the ability to balance and tactfully negotiate among opposing viewpoints within and outside the organization and to compromise when necessary.  High sensitivity to work with diverse personalities, ability to listen as well as give advice, to respect the views and abilities of others, and to collaborate with integrity, consistency, good judgment, and a sense of humor are important.

The ideal candidate must have experience and proven success in expanding, diversifying, and sustaining an organization’s funding base by raising significant resources from individuals, foundations, corporations, and public agencies on behalf of its mission and organization.  Demonstrated written and verbal communication/presentation skills, as well as the ability to articulate MDF’s mission with passion, enthusiasm, and a focus toward action to a variety of audiences is required.

The preferred candidate is someone who brings the spirit of entrepreneurship to our team.  A candidate who embodies the innovation, adaptability, and drive commonly associated with entrepreneurial ventures. This role provides the opportunity to inject fresh perspectives, foster growth, and drive initiatives forward within our organization. The person must be fueled by the challenge of breaking new ground and thrive in environments where creativity and initiative are paramount.

The ideal candidate will be a strong and effective leader; a strong listener with an inclusive, team-oriented management style that inspires, empowers, motivates, and develops staff.  The candidate will also have a keen ability to establish and maintain a productive and positive organizational culture with all stakeholders (i.e., staff, Board, donors, members, and partners). A genuine and authentic connection to nature and the outdoors is required as well as an understanding of the broader hunting community is a must.

Executive level achievement in the fields of conservation, advocacy, policy, law, and/or related fields is preferred but not required. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required; a master’s degree is desired.

MDF will consider candidates requiring a hybrid work environment.  It is anticipated that approximately 50% of the CEOs time will be spent at the MDF headquarters in Utah or traveling on MDF related business.

MDF has an annual operating budget of approximately $19M and assets of $7M.  It is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors and managed by 54 dedicated staff.  It is headquartered in Clearfield, Utah, just outside of Salt Lake City.

The general compensation range for this position annually is between $225,000 - $250,000, with reasonable flexibility.  Health, retirement, PTO and other benefits are available.

If you want to lead this dynamic organization, please confidentially submit a current resume and cover letter to Kittleman & Associates. The cover letter is an opportunity to showcase your passion for Mule Deer Foundation’s vision and mission, as well organizational impact in current or prior roles.

The position will remain open until filled, but applicants are highly encouraged to submit their materials as soon as possible to ensure full consideration. Simply go to,  https://apptrkr.com/5253246 and click the “Apply Button” at the bottom of the page.
